Ezekiel Onyango, a veteran doctor, is one of the Kenyan runners who run not as a means to earn a living but as a hobby and a way to ensure they live an active and healthy lifestyle. As a recreational runner, he is set on a journey to run all the world’s major marathons; Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City Marathons.

“As a busy businessman, I found that having an online coach who I can talk to at any time on the phone and who monitors my performance on Strava is suitable for my lifestyle. This arrangement allows me to receive professional guidance and support from an experienced runner while accommodating my hectic schedule. Having Coach Justin has proven beneficial for my running journey. With his assistance, I have a well-structured training plan tailored to my needs which has resulted in improvements in my running form, pace, endurance, Vo2 Max etc. Additionally, having a running coach brings discipline and consistency to my training, as I feel accountable to someone for my progress as a runner,” Onyango said.

How long have you been running?

I’ve been running since July 2019. Initially, I started running to keep a check on my weight since I was travelling frequently and I led a sedentary lifestyle. I noticed that I was gaining weight during my trips. However, over the years, my motivation for running has evolved, and now I run not just to manage weight but because I genuinely enjoy running. Running has become more than just a way to stay in shape; it has become a source of pleasure and fulfillment for me.

You just ran under 2hrs for your half marathon at the Nairobi Marathon. How was your race? What lessons did you run and what plans do you have for your next race?

This was a memorable experience for me. The journey leading to Nairobi City Marathon was filled with dedication, a well-structured training plan and a focus on running a Half Marathon in under 2 hours. The preparation included a mix of long runs, interval training, Fartleks, tempo runs, Easy runs and jogging to build both endurance and speed.

I learnt about the first edition of Nairobi City Marathon last year (April 2022) when I was running Rotterdam Marathon, and I decided not to miss the second edition.

During the race, I learnt that proper preparation and dedicated training are key to success. As I approached the final stretch along the Expressway with the scenic view of Nairobi and into Nyayo Stadium, a surge of adrenaline and determination propelled me forward. The sight of the finish line brought a mix of relief and triumph. Crossing the finish line brought a profound sense of accomplishment, knowing that the hard work and preparation had paid off. The experience of running a half marathon with such readiness was not only physically rewarding but it was also emotionally fulfilling. It left a lasting memory, motivating me to continue my passion for running and seeking out new challenges in the future.

Next Race: Standard Chartered Marathon in October.

You are not an elite runner, but you keep travelling to run marathons. What motivates you to do so?

As a recreational runner, running marathons in other countries gives me a unique opportunity to explore new places and go beyond the typical tourist experience. I look forward to running the six Majors as part of my bucket list challenges. I hope my kids can learn from my dedication and commitment that anything is possible in this life.

Does running affect your occupation in any way?

Running has affected my occupation positively by increasing my energy levels, alertness and overall well-being. This has led to improved mental clarity and focus and increased productivity at work.

Have you always been training under a coach? How has coaching helped you improve your running?

No, I have not always been training under a coach. I only started training under coach Justin Lagat about 14 weeks ago in preparation for the second edition of the Nairobi City Marathon. Prior to that, I did not have a coach overseeing my training.
