As Lokedi and Korir return to defend their titles, the 130th Boston Marathon promises an electrifying race this Monday, April 20, 2026. With a storied legacy dating back to 1897, this year’s milestone edition is poised to deliver one of the most competitive and memorable events in recent history.

Anticipation is building among fans and participants alike, as the city prepares to host a celebration of world-class running, fierce rivalries, and the enduring spirit that has defined the Boston Marathon for generations.

Podium finishers from last year’s men’s race return for another fierce battle: defending champion John Korir, runner-up and 2025 World Championships gold medalist Alphonce Felix Simbu, and third-placer Cybrian Kotut of Kenya.

In the women’s race, Sharon Lokedi, who set a new course record of 2:17:22, returns to defend her title. Her main rival from last year, Hellen Obiri, has opted for the London Marathon, but Lokedi still faces a strong and competitive field, making her title defence far from certain.

The United States boasts a strong presence in both fields, led by women’s national record holder Emily Sisson (2:18:29), Sarah Hall, Susanna Sullivan, Fiona O’Keeffe, Zouhair Talbi, and Galen Rupp.

With all podium finishers returning and such depth of talent, the men’s race promises to keep spectators riveted.

Korir faces tough competition in the men’s race

Korir, fresh off a victory at a competitive cross-country race in Kenya two months ago, has already shown he’s in excellent form this year. He possesses the endurance and speed needed to contend for another Boston win.

However, Kipruto—winner of the Boston, Chicago, Tokyo, and New York City marathons—surpasses Korir both in major titles and with a personal best of 2:02:16.

“Boston holds a special place in my heart, as I won my first Major there in 2021 and have finished third twice,” said Kipruto. “I look forward to starting my 2026 season and racing a fast group of men.”

With both runners determined to leave a mark on Monday, the race could build into an exciting climax.

Holding the World Champion title could give Tanzania’s Simbu a psychological edge, potentially boosting him higher on the podium than last year.

One of the Americans to watch in the men’s race is Talbi, who won the Houston Marathon earlier this year in 2:05:45—a time that makes him the third-fastest American ever. He now has the chance to become the top American marathoner.

Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir will be an interesting debutant to watch.

Lokedi, the favourite in the women’s race

Although the women’s field remains extremely competitive, Lokedi’s chances of defending her title look stronger, as she holds the course record and boasts the fastest time in the field. She knows the course intimately and has proven she can win without pacemakers.

The 32-year-old, a winner of both the Boston and New York City marathons, underlined her readiness by finishing second at the New York Half Marathon last month.

With eight women in the field having run under 2:19:00, any of them could spring a surprise.

Two other runners who have run under 2:18 in the women’s field are Irine Cheptai (2:17:51), the 2017 World Cross Country and fourth at the Boston Marathon last year, and Workenesh Edesa (2:17:55), third at the 2023 Tokyo Marathon and sixth at the 2021 Boston Marathon.

As Mary Kate Shea, the Chief Operating Officer at the B.A.A., puts it, “The 130th edition of the Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America will feature unrivalled depth and head-to-head racing that’ll be exciting from start to finish. The strength of the American field, combined with the international field’s experience, is setting the stage for a clash that could result in records and sprint finishes on Boylston Street. The best of the best have circled the Boston Marathon on their calendar.”

With seasoned champions, rising stars, and unpredictable elements, the 130th Boston Marathon is set to deliver drama, inspiration, and unforgettable moments. Whether records fall or new legends are made, this iconic race will once again prove why it holds a special place in the hearts of athletes and spectators alike.
